Texturing Exercise

Texturing a shipping container for an exercise for AIE.

The Story

The exercise was to think up a story of this shipping container and create it as best as you can within a week. The shipping container itself was fine, but the challenge was to a compelling story through texturing.

The idea was to have a monster inside a weathered and damaged shipping container. There would be signs to keep people away and the bloody hand prints on the door would show that people tried or died trying to force the monster into the shipping container. Blood would drool out of the container showing that some people didn’t make it out alive from the ordeal.

Texturing

I used photoshop to texture the majority of it. For the base textures I used the textures from CGtextures.com and changed the colours and feel to whatever I wanted in Photoshop. The exercise itself was to let us practice nDo, a photoshop addon which allowed us to create cool normal maps so we could put them into 3D.

So I created the diffuse first, then the Normal map. nDo was used to create some details in the shipping container itself such as the divets on the side and the front of the shipping container. But nDo was also used for the scratch marks of the beast trying to escape and the signs as well.

I was surprised on how well nDo does the normals, so I went crazy and wanted to see how far the texturing could go.
